Coronavirus Live Updates: C.D.C. Recommends Wearing Masks

Coronavirus Updates: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Recommends Wearing Masks: Surgical masks and N95 respirators should be reserved for health care workers

New York suffers its biggest daily death toll, while Alabama becomes the 41st state to issue a stay-at-home order.

“The CDC is additionally advising simple cloth coverings to help people who may have the virus and do not know it keep from from transmitting to others,” - US Surgeon General Jerome Adams.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to study coronavirus spread across the United States.  As we know now, a significant portion of individuals with coronavirus is asymptomatic, meaning they lack symptoms of the virus. It is also hard to stop spreading the virus since it can get transmitted from one to another before showing any symptoms. This means that the corona virus can spread when we interact with each other in any form (speaking, coughing, or sneezing etc.) even with people who doesnt experience any symptoms.  Therefore, CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public especially if distancing is hard to maintain (stores, subway, etc.).

The cloth face coverings recommended by CDC are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators.  Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

Is hand sanitizer effective against COVID-19?

FDA: The best way to prevent the spread of infections and decrease the risk of getting sick is by washing your hands with plain soap and water, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is essential, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing one’s nose. If soap and water are not available, CDC recommends consumers use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
